Transgenerational Entrepreneurship : exploring growth and performance in family firms across generations

Knowledge resources and performance : The moderating role of family involvement in strategy making

Description:

According to the RBV, knowledge resources can be sources of competitive advantage. Yet, performance also depends on how these resources are managed and leveraged in strategy processes. We investigate how the effect of knowledge resources on performance is moderated by the involvement of the owner family in both business level and corporate level strategy. We find that family involvement in business strategy enhances the performance implications of knowledge-based resources, while family involvement in corporate strategy has negative performance implications for the usage of these resources. This study sheds new light on the potential benefits and drawbacks that family involvement in strategy and offers both theoretical and practical implications

Intangible resources and family firm performance: the moderating role family involvement in strategy making

Description:

According to the RBV, intangible resources might be sources of sustainable competitive advantage because they are ingrained in the unique interaction between the family and its firm and inherently difficult to imitate by competitors. In this paper we set out to examine how two important intangible resources in the family business context, knowledge-based and reputational resources are linked to performance. In line with RBV literature proposing that resources alone do not confer a competitive advantage (Collis, 1995) we propose a contingency perspective for family involvement in strategy making. Indeed, we empirically show that the link between intangible resources and firm performance is moderated by family involvement in strategy making. The paper sheds new light on both the direct effects of reputational and knowledge-based resources on firm performance in family firms, and on the potential benefits and drawbacks of family involvement in continuous and disruptive strategy making on the efficiency of resource usage.

Intangible resources and Performance in Family Firms: The moderating Role of Familiness

Description:

For family firms, the resource-based view (RBV) stresses the relevance of intangible resources emerging in the unique interaction between the family and the firm, and captured through the notion of familiness. In addition to the possession of intangible resources- e.g. knowledge-based and reputational resources- the value of resources is dependent upon their use. Managers' involvement in strategy making is thus likely to moderate the relationship between the existence of intangible resources and performance. After hypothesizing about the positive relationship between knowledge-based resources and performance, and between reputational resources and performance in family firms, we differentiate between family involvement in continuous strategy making, and disruptive strategy making to capture the moderating role of familiness.

What Do Entrepreneurs Actually Do? : An Observational Study of Entrepreneurs' Everyday Behavior in the Start-Up and Growth Stages

Description:

In this study, we used the sociological method of structured observation to investigate the everyday behavior of six entrepreneurs in the start-up stage and six entrepreneurs in the growth stage. Our results suggest the existence of both commonalities and differences between these two stages with regard to activities, functions, exploration vs. exploitation, and communication. Building on these detailed observations, we develop a taxonomy specifying the constitutive elements of entrepreneurs' behavior on a continuum that spans from single, discrete actions of entrepreneurs to actions concerning the broader organization.

Querdenken als Königsdisziplin

Description:

Business Model Innovation

Description:

Description:

Social Entrepreneurship Research as a Means of Transformation : A Vision for the Year 2028

Description:

In this essay we suggest directions and perspectives for social entrepreneurship research that could result in a state in which social entrepreneurship would have become mainstream. This includes the need to delineate and define social entrepreneurship vis-à-vis commercial entrepreneurship, the question of growth and scaling up of social ventures, the role of social entrepreneurship on a macroeconomic level, and the use of critical theory as a theoretical lens. Our recommendations are inspired by a Professional Development Workshop on 'Social Entrepreneurship: Future Directions in Education and Research' organized by the authors at the Academy of Management Conference 2010 in Montréal
