Beschreibung

Hintergrundpapier zu den Teilen 1, 2 und 7 des Jahresberichts 2007 der Kommission für Konjunkturfragen 2007 - At the end of 2007, the Swiss ‘Kommission für Konjunkturfragen' (Economic Advisory Board of the Swiss Government) founded in 1932 will be dissolved. Thus, there is no longer an independent committee to comment - quasi officially - Swiss economic policy. In this paper a short synopsis of the history of this committee and the change of its main tasks is given. Its main activity was to prepare reports on economic policy and, in particular, business cycle questions; the more important reports were published in the journal "Die Volkswirtschaft". A short overview of these reports is provided, before the different economic policy philosophies of the committee are discussed: it started with a corporatist view after the Second World War, followed by a Keynesian demand oriented concept, up to a more supply side oriented philosophy in the more recent time. The paper concludes with some remarks on the possibility of business cycle policy and the situation of economic policy advice in Switzerland.
