Unternehmenskrisen und Finanzskandale haben in der jüngeren Vergangenheit das Vertrauen von Investoren und der Öffentlichkeit in die Wirksamkeit der internen und externen Unternehmenskontrolle geschwächt. Weltweit wurden regulatorische Anforderungen an die Gestaltung Interner Kontrollsysteme erhoben, die teilweise tiefgehende Eingriffe in die Überwachungs- und Kontrollaktivitäten der Unternehmen bedeuteten. Auch hat sich vielfach in den Unternehmen selbst die Erkenntnis durchgesetzt, dass ein präventives und aktives Management operationeller Risiken mithilfe Interner Kontrollsysteme dazu beitragen kann, den vielfältigen Herausforderungen begegnen sowie den Unternehmenserfolg nachhaltig sichern zu können. Um den hohen Stellenwert Interner Kontrollsysteme als sinnvolles Element jedes Prozesses zu gewährleisten, hat sich das System jedoch an endogene und exogene Unternehmenscharakteristiken anzupassen. Dies umfasst die Gestaltung des Gesamtsystems, dessen Einbettung in die Aufbau- und Ablauforganisation des Unternehmens sowie die Koordination mit anderen Management- und Führungssystemen. Vor diesem Hintergrund untersucht diese Arbeit die Gestaltung und Anwendung Interner Kontrollsysteme sowie die Relevanz unternehmensinterner und unternehmensexterner Kontextfaktoren für die Organisation, Anwendung und Wirksamkeit Interner Kontrollsysteme in mittelgrossen Schweizer Unternehmen.
This research article provides empirical insights on the key drivers for successful internal and external innovation network management. The hypotheses are tested empirically using survey data collected from stock-listed companies in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The data include the complete responses from 141 R&D managers for the period from 2004 to 2008. Our results show that cross-functional teamwork in R&D projects has been increasingly implemented as part of the internal network strategy. Interestingly, we found no significant effect of intensive cross-functional employee cooperation on the firms' innovation performance. According to our result, key driver for internal innovation network management is a fault-tolerant innovation culture, as it is positively related to product innovation performance. Regarding external innovation network management, the use of Web 2.0 and social networking technologies is a key driver for high product innovation performance. In addition, the results reveal the endurance of external innovation networks as a key driver for the existence of radical innovations. Innovation networks that are older than five years have a substantial positive influence on product innovation performance and on the existence of radical innovations.
Despite the fact that childbearing is time-consuming (i.e., associated with a negative resource effect), we descriptively find female researchers with children in business and economics to be more productive than female researchers without children. Hence, female researchers with children either manage to overcompensate the negative resource effect associated with childbearing by working harder (positive incentive effect), or only the most productive female researchers decide to go for a career in academia and have children at the same time (positive self-selection effect). Our first descriptive evidence on the timing of parenthood among more than 400 researchers in business and economics from Austria, Germany and the German-speaking part of Switzerland hints at the latter being the case: only the most productive female researchers with children dare to self-select (or are selected) into an academic career. Our results have important policy implications when it comes to reducing the “leaky pipeline” in academia.
