Open Innovation in European industries: : executive summary

Description:

The European Academic Network for Open Innovation – (OI-Net) is an EU co-financed project designed to promote coopera,on on open innovation research and educa,on. It consists of 51 academic and industrial partners from 35 European countries. One of the outcomes of this project is the first European Survey on IdenCficaCon of Industrial Needs for Open InnovaCon EducaCon. The OI-Net project partners collected over 500 responses from European companies (large, SMEs, and micro firms) and this execu,ve report provides the summary of the key findings on the adop,on of open innova,on in companies, self-perceived status of open innova,on and importance of skills and abili,es that open innova,on specialist should possess. Also this report presents comparison of the open innova,on ac,vi,es between companies who claim to adopt open innova,on (adopters), plan to adopt (planners) and those who do not adopt and not planning to adopt it in the future (non adopters).

Ownership structure, asset intensity and firm performance

Description:

Research Question/Issue: This article studies the interrelation between ownership structure, asset intensity and corporate performance and risk in the hospitality industry. This industry is characterised by a strong presence of blockholders and a tendency to divest its real estate making it an ideal setting to analyse the impact on firm performance and risks. Research Findings/Insights: Merging ownership data with accounting and market data from a sample of 15 countries between 2004 and 2013, we find that ownership structures affect the asset intensity and the disposal of assets by corporations. We further observe that both these variables have a significant influence on different measures of corporate risk and accounting and market performance. Theoretical/Academic Implications: This study provides empirical support for the classic agency theory that ownership structures impact corporate performance through investments and the use of assets. It thus proposes an integrated framework which explains a way through which ownership has an effect on firm performance and risk. Practitioner/Policy Implications: This study offers insights to managers on the effect an asset light strategy has on corporate performance. It further describes the preference shareholders tend to have on this corporate policy. In addition, it provides investors with a framework to understand the stakes of owning one’s properties or to dispose them to concentrate on the core business.

Plus de femmes dans la gouvernance d'entreprise: : atout ou fardeau ?

Description:

An alternative to online travel agencies for retention of hotel customers

Description:

This paper describes a service that allows hotels to reduce their dependency form online travel agencies, such as Booking.com or Expedia. Online travel agencies are extremely helpful to increase the number of new reservations of most hotels, but they seem to be less effective for niche hotels that seek for recurring customers. By following the guidelines for design research, we seek to develop a new online service, which combines existing solutions to (1) acquire new clients, (2) book a room on the website of the hotel and (3) retain the customer after service delivery. We illustrate a case study of a hotel, which has reduced the number of clients obtained via Booking.com by following our guidelines.

Multi-method approach to compare the socio-demographic typology of residents and clusters of electricity load curves in a Swiss sustainable neighbourhood

Description:

A sustainable neighbourhood was built Switzerland by one of the leaders in this field. Half of the 400 apartments have been equipped with smart meters delivering big data on energy consumption (electricity, water, heating…). The company would like to know if it is possible to link socio-demographic typology of residents with energy consumption patterns. To answer this question we present in this article a multi-method approach combining qualitative analysis, frequently used in marketing (multiple correspondence analyses), and quantitative analysis from applied statistics to answer this question. First, we have conducted a survey among the residents of the sustainable neighbourhood to gather socio-demographic data, and then we have proposed a marketing typology of residents. In parallel, we have analysed load curves with statistical models (clustering factors, hermano beta models, coincidence factors, som, expert practice) to see if there are patterns of energy consumption and to determine groups of similar load curves. Then we have compared the discrepancies in the composition of the groups between both methods. This study is based on a single case study generating a new research hypothesis: the typology of residents based on socio-demographic data can be linked to energy consumption pattern of a household.

Cost (In)efficiency and institutional pressures in nursing home chains

Description:

Over the past 10 years, merger activities in the private for-profit nursing home industry have been increasing in Europe. In this paper, we investigate chain affiliation’s influence on the performance of lucrative nursing homes. We measure performance using a cost frontier estimated by stochastic analysis on a sample of 370 French for-profit nursing homes. We find that cost efficiency decreases with the number of facilities in a chain. We also identify different external actor types in nursing homes’ institutional environment and test their influence. We show that nursing home chains’ cost efficiency improves when local governments and shareholders exert pressure. Our results are robust to alternative model specifications and another definition of costs. Overall, our findings inform researchers, as well as standards setters, of the relevance of chain affiliation and of the role of institutional pressures regarding cost containment at the nursing home level.

Analysis of satisfiers and dissatisfiers in online hotel reviews on social media

Description:

The purpose of this study is to analyze online hotel reviews produced by customers to identify and compare factors known as satisfiers and dissatisfiers based on Herzberg’s two-factor theory. This approach was applied to compare full-service and limited-service hotels, which can show different levels of customer expectation.
