Understanding Bank-Run Contagion

Description:

We study experimental coordination games to examine through which transmission channels, and under which information conditions, a panic-based depositor-run at one bank may trigger a panic-based depositor-run at another bank. We find that withdrawals at one bank trigger withdrawals at another bank by increasing players' beliefs that other depositors in their own bank will withdraw, making them more likely to withdraw as well. Importantly though, observed withdrawals affect depositors' beliefs, and are thus contagious, only when depositors know that there are economic linkages between their bank and the observed bank.

Explaining the phenomenon of waste allocation among waste treatment operations: case studies, concepts & methods

Description:

Heterogeneous Employment Effects of Job Search Programmes: A Machine Learning Approach

Description:

We systematically investigate the effect heterogeneity of job search programmes for unemployed workers. To investigate possibly heterogeneous employment effects, we combine non-experimental causal empirical models with Lasso-type estimators. The empirical analyses are based on rich administrative data from Swiss social security records. We find considerable heterogeneities only during the first six months after the start of training. Consistent with previous results of the literature, unemployed persons with fewer employment opportunities profit more from participating in these programmes. Furthermore, we also document heterogeneous employment effects by residence status. Finally, we show the potential of easy-to-implement programme participation rules for improving average employment effects of these active labour market programmes.

Dynamic Linkages between Hedge Funds and Traditional Financial Assets: Evidence from Emerging Markets

Description:

This paper analyses the short- and long-term relationships between hedge funds and traditional financial assets using multivariate cointegration analysis in order to investigate if the fees charged by hedge funds are justified for the kind of exposure they provide to investors. We therefore create an emerging market composite hedge fund index as well as region specific indices based upon a unique and large sample of 404 emerging market hedge funds obtained from the merger of two different databases. As to whether diversification benefits arise from adding emerging markets hedge funds to an emerging markets bond/equity portfolio, our results show that the advantages are significantly less for Eastern Europe than for the other emerging market regions of Asia and Latin America during the period January 1998 through May 2006. In summary, we find evidence that emerging market hedge funds in general are redundant securities for long-term investment horizons.

Korruption - Ursachen, Formen und Konsequenzen
